Dr. Genevieve McSporran is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at Murdoch University, where she also holds the position of Academic Chair of Health and Physical Education Programs in the School of Education. She is responsible for the Bachelor of Education programs in Primary (1-10 Health and Physical Education) and Secondary Health and Physical Education. McSporran obtained her Doctor of Education from the University of Western Australia in 2018. Her doctoral thesis, titled "The Australian professional standards for teachers: a policy trajectory analysis," examined the development and implications of teacher standards in Australia. Her academic qualifications include a Graduate Diploma of Education in Health Education, Physical Education, and Science. With broad teaching experience across primary, secondary, alternative university entry, and tertiary settings, she contributes to courses such as EDN692 Teaching Health Years 11-12.
McSporran's research specializations encompass health and physical education, adolescent and teacher wellbeing, motivation and confidence in teaching physical education, and the application of self-determination theory. Key publications include the co-authored article "An interventional study with the Maldives generalist teachers in primary school physical education: An application of self-determination theory" published in PLOS ONE in 2022 with Azeema Abdulla, Peter R. Whipp, and Timothy Teo, which investigated professional learning workshops to increase students' moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and has received 27 citations. In 2024, she contributed to the book chapter "Family, School, and Community Contributions to Student Outcomes: International Perspectives on Family, School, and Community Factors That Contribute to Students’ Health, Wellbeing, and Achievement" in The Sage Handbook of Sociology of Education, co-authored with Laura B. Perry and Peter R. Whipp. Additionally, she led the 2025 scoping review "Exploring adolescent wellbeing." As a supervisor, McSporran has guided doctoral students, including David Ramsay's "The Effect of Personality and Mindset on the..." (2025), A. Lamble's "Exploration of the Impact of Connectivist Distance..." (2025), and M. Day's "Towards Understanding Wellbeing: Boys' Perspectives..." (2024). Her work fosters collaborations, such as with Gymnastics WA, and she serves as Board Chair at Churchlands Senior High School, demonstrating community impact.
