McSporran's research specializations encompass health and physical education, adolescent and teacher wellbeing, motivation and confidence in teaching physical education, and the application of self-determination theory. Key publications include the co-authored article "An interventional study with the Maldives generalist teachers in primary school physical education: An application of self-determination theory" published in PLOS ONE in 2022 with Azeema Abdulla, Peter R. Whipp, and Timothy Teo, which investigated professional learning workshops to increase students' moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and has received 27 citations.
