About Geoff

Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Gallop AC, FASSA is an Emeritus Professor in the Government and International Relations discipline in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney. He served as Director of the University’s Graduate School of Government from 2006 to 2015, developing executive education programs and teaching in public sector policy and governance. Prior to this, Gallop held senior academic positions and pursued a distinguished political career as a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1986 to 2006 and Premier of Western Australia from 2001 to 2006. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Western Australia, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford, and Master of Philosophy from Murdoch University.

Gallop’s research specializations include public participation in governance, citizenship and governance, governance and civil society, politics and religion, and deliberative democracy, with a focus on promoting trust between governments and citizens. Key publications comprise “Helping Our Democracy to Work Better” (Meanjin, 2015), “A Republican History of Australia” (2014), “New development: Public leadership, public value and the public interest” (2011), “Social Democratic Governments and Business” (Labour History, 2010), “Tackling depression” (Journal of Mental Health, 2010), and “The Western Australian election 1983” (Politics, 1984). He has made significant contributions through public lectures, essays on social and political issues, and roles such as chair of the Research Committee for the New Democracy Foundation and member of the Geneva-based Global Commission on Drug Policy. Gallop was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 2022 and holds the Companion of the Order of Australia and Fellowship of the Institute of Public Administration Australia.
