About George

George A. Mashour, M.D., Ph.D., serves as the Edward F. Domino Collegiate Professor of Neuroscience, Vice Dean for Faculty, Professor of Anesthesiology, and Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in neuroscience from Georgetown University. Joining the University of Michigan in 2007 as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery, he advanced to full Professor in 2017 and received an additional appointment as Professor of Pharmacology in 2021. Mashour held the Robert B. Sweet Professorship and served as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology from 2019 to 2024. In May 2024, he was appointed Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Faculty Development. Effective January 1, 2025, he assumes the roles of Interim Executive Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in the Medical School and Interim Chief Academic Officer for Michigan Medicine. He founded the Center for Consciousness Science in 2014 and the Michigan Psychedelic Center in 2022, and previously directed the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research while serving as Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research. Mashour has led the Association of University Anesthesiologists as president and served as a trustee for the International Anesthesia Research Society.

An internationally recognized leader in Medicine, Mashour conducts NIH-funded research on the neurobiology of consciousness and unconsciousness across computational models, laboratory science, and clinical trials. His interests include multidisciplinary approaches to the study of consciousness, network mechanisms of consciousness and unconsciousness, theories of consciousness, interfaces of sleep neurobiology and general anesthesia, and intraoperative awareness and metrics of consciousness. Representative publications include the book Consciousness, Awareness, and Anesthesia (2010), "Cognitive Unbinding: A Neuroscientific Paradigm of General Anesthesia and Related States of Unconsciousness" (2013), "Recovery of Consciousness and Cognition after General Anesthesia in Humans" (2021), and "Anesthesia and the Neurobiology of Consciousness" (2024). His scholarship has earned over 20,800 citations on Google Scholar. Honors include the Excellence in Research Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (2021), election to the National Academy of Medicine (2018), and fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
