About Gerald

Professor Gerald Lip is an Honorary Professor in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen. He serves as Clinical Director for breast screening in the North East of Scotland and as Principal Investigator of the GEMINI prospective evaluation of mammography artificial intelligence. He has led a four-year retrospective research project on the same topic with the Industrial Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Diagnostics in Scotland and was awarded a two-year Innovation Fellowship by the Chief Scientist Office of Scotland to lead innovation adoption in the NHS.

A graduate of Trinity College Dublin with a medical degree and an MSc in Health Informatics, Professor Lip completed his radiology training in Aberdeen. He holds positions including Vice Chair of the British Society of Breast Radiology, membership on the UK Royal College of Radiologists Informatics committee and the Advisory Board of the Centre for Doctoral Training for Biomedical AI at the University of Edinburgh, and serves as scientific advisor to the National Covid Chest Imaging Database. He is active in research, education and training, publishing on topics such as AI integration in radiology, patient and professional attitudes toward AI, and related areas in breast imaging and screening. Recent publications include the GEMINI study in Nature Cancer (2026) and work on AI adoption in the NHS in BJR Artificial Intelligence (2024). He contributes to national and international efforts in AI policy, education and clinical trials in healthcare.
