Gerd Faltings is a mathematician affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Münster in 1978. Faltings served as a Member in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1988 and again from 1992 to 1993. His career includes positions at Harvard University, the University of Wuppertal, Princeton University from 1985 to 1994, and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, where he was a Scientific Member and later Director until becoming Director Emeritus in 2023.
Faltings has made significant contributions to algebraic geometry and number theory. In 1983, he proved the Mordell conjecture, now known as Faltings' theorem, along with related conjectures by Shafarevich and Tate. He received the Fields Medal in 1986 for this work. Additional honors include the Abel Prize in 2026, the Shaw Prize in 2015, the King Faisal International Prize in 2014, the Leibniz Prize in 1996, and election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2018. Faltings has influenced the field through his research on moduli spaces of abelian varieties, p-adic cohomology, Diophantine approximation, and vector bundles on algebraic curves, including a proof of the Verlinde formula.
