Professor Gianluca Ranzi is a Professor in the School of Civil Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, where he serves as Director of the Centre for Advanced Structural Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of New South Wales in 2003 and previously worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the same university. Ranzi's academic career at the University of Sydney progressed from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor, supported by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship. His research specializations include structural engineering, architectural engineering, building services and systems engineering, electrical energy generation (including renewables, excluding photovoltaics), electrical energy transmission, networks and systems, and power demand side management. His work focuses on the time-dependent behaviour of composite steel-concrete structures, addressing phenomena such as creep, shrinkage, and their impacts on long-span elements, alongside sustainable building energy solutions.
Ranzi is co-author of key textbooks: 'Structural Analysis: Principles, Methods and Modelling' (CRC Press, 2014, with R. Ian Gilbert) and 'Design of Prestressed Concrete to AS3600-2009' (CRC Press, 2016, with R. Ian Gilbert and N. C. Mickleborough). Selected publications include 'Shrinkage-Induced Response of Composite Steel–Concrete Slabs' (Applied Sciences, 2022), 'Effects of non-uniform shrinkage on the long-term behaviour of steel–concrete composite beams' (International Journal of Steel Structures, 2015), and 'Time-Dependent Analysis of Long-Span, Concrete-Filled Steel Arch Bridges' (Journal of Bridge Engineering, 2013). He has received substantial funding, including the ARC Future Fellowship FT140100130 ('Adaptive structural systems for high-performance buildings', $857,049, 2014–2018), ARC Discovery Project DP250102124 ('Cementless carbon-negative concrete', $623,255, 2025–), and Linkage Project LP210100032 ('Transforming the brick industry through prefabricated composite technology', 2021). With 245 research outputs garnering over 6,000 citations, Ranzi has influenced structural design and sustainable construction practices. He contributes to teaching and PhD supervision in civil engineering.
