About Giovanni

Professor Giovanni Abrahão Salum Júnior is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil. He holds an MD from UFRGS and completed clinical training in psychiatry at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA). He earned a PhD in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences from UFRGS, including a sandwich period at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the Emotion and Development Branch, and completed postdoctoral research in the Graduate Program in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UFRGS.

Professor Salum serves as a full member of the Graduate Program in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UFRGS and coordinates the Section of Negative Affect and Social Processes at HCPA. His academic appointments include roles as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at UFRGS. He has contributed to research on developmental psychopathology, interventions for emotional disorders with a focus on irritability across the lifespan, and mental health care in the public health system. He previously coordinated mental health services for the municipality of Porto Alegre from 2017 to 2019 and is involved with the National Institute of Developmental Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents (INPD). He is currently on leave from UFRGS to work at the Child Mind Institute.
