About Gregory

Professor Gregory Whitwell is Professor Emeritus in the University of Sydney Business School. He served as Dean of the University of Sydney Business School from 2014 to 2019, leading the school during a period of enhanced recognition, including rankings among top business schools in the Asia-Pacific. Prior to joining Sydney, he was Professor of Marketing and Senior Deputy Dean at UNSW Business School from 2011 to 2014, acting as de facto chief operating officer responsible for strategy execution, academic staffing, education programs, and research alignment. Earlier, he held the position of Professor of Marketing at the University of Melbourne and served as Deputy Dean and Director of the Graduate School in the Faculty of Business and Economics there. He has also occupied academic positions at Monash University and the University of Otago.

Gregory Whitwell earned a Bachelor of Economics with first-class honours from Monash University, graduating top of his class in economic history, and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. His primary academic specialty is marketing, with research interests encompassing stakeholder salience, ethical consumer behavior, market orientation, relational exchange, and organizational learning. His work has been published in premier journals including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Business Research, and Journal of Business Ethics, amassing 28 research outputs with over 4,000 citations. Notable publications include 'Why Ethical Consumers Don't Walk Their Talk: Towards a Framework for Understanding the Gap Between the Ethical Purchase Intentions and Actual Buying Behaviour of Ethically Minded Consumers' (Journal of Business Ethics, 2010, co-authored with Carrington and Neville), 'Stakeholder Salience Revisited: Refining, Redefining, and Refueling an Underdeveloped Corporate Responsibility Concept' (Journal of Business Ethics, 2011, co-authored with Neville and Bell), and 'Buyer Satisfaction with Relational Exchange Across the Relationship Lifecycle' (European Journal of Marketing, 2007, co-authored with Terawatanavong and Widing). Whitwell has received the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Medal for Scholarship and was re-elected Chair of the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education. He has contributed to editorial boards, international advisory panels, and organizations such as AACSB International.
