About Guangyi
Dr. Guangyi Pan is a Lecturer in International Political Studies at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He earned his PhD in International Politics from UNSW Sydney in 2024, having previously studied at Nanjing University and worked at UNICEF China. His research specializations include asymmetric politics in the Indo-Pacific region, China's alliance and alignment policies, Sino-Soviet (Russia) relations, neoclassical realism in International Relations, Foreign Policy Analysis, and Cold War history. Pan has secured research grants as lead investigator, including HASS Group Funding in 2025 for 'Australia's Approaches to Nuclear Deterrence and Social Factors' ($10,000), Security & Defence PluS Seed Grant 2025 ($15,600), and HASS Group Funding 2026 for ‘Nuclear Governance, Civil Society and Disaster Resilience in Japan's Indo-Pacific Engagement’ ($7,000). He received the University International Postgraduate Award from UNSW during his doctoral studies.
Pan's scholarly contributions encompass books such as National Role Conception and Neoclassical Realism: A Synthetic Exploration of the Sino-Soviet Alignment (Routledge, 2025) and The US Covert Operation in Poland in the 1980s (Nanjing University Press, 2023), alongside a book chapter 'Pacific Island Countries in the time of great power competition' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025). His journal articles feature 'Asymmetric relations and systemic misperceptions: Why and how Australia and China talk past each other' (International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, 2025), 'The transformation of asymmetry: the evolution of Philippine and Vietnamese South China Sea policies and the asymmetry of attention' (Pacific Review, 2024), and 'The Struggle for Certainty: Ontological Security, the Rise of Nationalism, and Australia-China Tensions after COVID-19' (Journal of Chinese Political Science, 2021), with publications also in Australian Journal of International Affairs, Chinese Journal of International Politics, and others. He contributes analytical pieces and media commentary to outlets including The Conversation, UNSW Newsroom, and Australian Institute of International Affairs, addressing topics such as Australia-China relations, China's foreign policy, and regional security dynamics.
