Professor Guanmin Liao is a Professor of Accounting and doctoral supervisor in the Accounting Department at the School of Business, Renmin University of China, where he also serves as Deputy Secretary of the College CPC Committee. He received his Bachelor's degree in Economics with a major in Registered Accounting in 2002, Master's degree in Management with a major in Accounting in 2004, and PhD in Management with a major in Accounting in 2007, all from the School of Business at Renmin University of China. From 2007 to 2018, he progressed from lecturer to professor and doctoral supervisor at the Accounting College of Central University of Finance and Economics. Additionally, he was a visiting scholar at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, from August 2011 to August 2012.
Professor Liao's research focuses on government regulation and corporate governance, as well as labor and corporate finance. His influential publications include 'The Brain Gain of Corporate Boards: Evidence from China' (Journal of Finance, 2015, with Mariassunta Giannetti and Xiaoyun Yu); 'The Externalities of Corruption: Evidence from Entrepreneurial Firms in China' (Review of Finance, 2021, with Mariassunta Giannetti, Jiaxing You, and Xiaoyun Yu), which won the Pagano-Zechner Prize for the Best Corporate Finance Paper; 'Agency Costs and Tax Planning when the Government is a Major Shareholder' (Journal of Accounting and Economics, 2019, with Mark Bradshaw and Mark Ma); 'Transporting Transparency: Director Foreign Experience and Corporate Information Environment' (Journal of International Business Studies, 2022, with Mark Ma and Xiaoyun Yu); and his monograph Government Intervention, Social Burdens and Executive Turnover in Listed Companies (Economic Science Press, 2010). He has earned the Renmin University of China Outstanding Young Scholar Award (2018), Sun Yefang Financial Innovation Award (2016), National Accounting Leading (Reserve) Talent from the Ministry of Finance (2013), and multiple excellence awards in teaching and supervision.
