About Guy

Guy Redden is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Gender and Cultural Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Lancaster University, a Master of Arts from Cardiff University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland. Prior to his current position, Redden served as a lecturer at the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom and at Prince of Songkla University in Thailand. Throughout his career at the University of Sydney, he has demonstrated excellence in teaching, earning the Dean's Citation for Excellence in Tutorials as part of the 2017 Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Excellence Awards. He has also taken on coordination roles, including serving as Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator in Gender and Cultural Studies.

Redden's research centers on cultural economy and the sociology of knowledge, exploring how shifting arrays of goods, services, and quantitative metrics constitute knowledge production and influence social and organizational practices. His major monograph, Questioning Performance Measurement: Metrics, Organizations and Society, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2019 and addresses the implications of performance metrics in various sectors, including higher education. He co-edited News Online: Transformations and Continuities with Graham Meikle in 2011 (Palgrave Macmillan) and Mediating Faiths: Religion and Socio-Cultural Change in the Twenty-First Century with Michael Bailey in 2011 (Ashgate). Key journal articles include "Is Reality TV Neoliberal?" in Television & New Media (2018), "Makeover Morality and Consumer Culture" (2007), and "Misterchef? Cooks, Chefs and Gender in MasterChef Australia" in Culture (2017). Additional contributions encompass "From RAE to ERA: Research Evaluation at Work in the Corporate University" (Australian Humanities Review, 2008) and editorial work such as the introduction to Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (2013). With 46 publications listed on ResearchGate and over 600 citations, his scholarship has impacted fields of cultural studies, media analysis, and neoliberal critique. Redden has delivered public seminars, including in the Gender and Cultural Studies Seminar Series at the University of Sydney.
