Great Professor!
Professor Gwénaëlle Proust is a Professor of Materials Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney. She serves as the Academic Director of the Sydney Manufacturing Hub, a position she has held since May 2022, having previously been Deputy Director and Director of Postgraduate Coursework in the School of Civil Engineering. Proust earned her Diplôme d'ingénieur, equivalent to a Bachelor of Engineering in Materials, from ISITEM in La Rochelle and Nantes, France, in 1999. She then pursued graduate studies at Drexel University in the United States, obtaining a Master's degree in 2002 and a PhD in 2005. Following her doctorate, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Materials Science and Technology Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory from May 2005 to December 2007 before joining the University of Sydney in January 2008.
Her research centers on elucidating the relationships between material properties and microstructure to optimize manufacturing processes and enhance material performance for greater energy efficiency and safer devices. Proust investigates mechanical deformation mechanisms in metals under complex loading paths, additive manufacturing techniques, and sustainable recycling of manufacturing waste and by-products. Her experimental approaches include optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction. Key publications include "Processing magnesium at room temperature" in Science (2020) and "Quantitative analysis of deformation twinning in zirconium" in the International Journal of Plasticity (2009), contributing to her profile with over 4,700 citations and an h-index of 39. She has secured major funding, such as an ARC LIEF grant of $546,254 in 2023 for powder manufacturing access. In professional service, she is the 2024 Vice President of Materials Australia, a member of the ARC College of Experts, and leads the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Mission of the University's Digital Sciences Initiative.
