Dr Haider Ghayeb is a Lecturer and Research Coordinator in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia's Sarawak Campus. He holds a PhD in Structural Engineering and Materials from Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2022), an MSc in Civil Engineering-Structure from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru, Malaysia (2014), and a BSc Eng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Babylon, Iraq (2003). Prior to joining Curtin University in May 2023, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Universiti Malaya and Universiti Tenaga Nasional from 2022 to 2023. His earlier academic roles include Assistant Lecturer and Demonstrator, as well as Senior Researcher, in the Department of Civil Engineering at Universiti Malaya from 2017 to 2021, and Lecturer at Babylon Institute, Al-Furat Alawst Technical University, Iraq, from 2003 to 2004. Ghayeb also has extensive industry experience, serving as Civil Site Engineer, Project Manager, and Consultant on infrastructure projects in Iraq from 2003 to 2012 and in Malaysia from 2019 to 2023 with companies including Castwell Industries, H&T Constructing Engineers, and CMS Cement Industries.
Ghayeb's academic interests center on structures including structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, precast concrete systems, steel systems, sustainable structural design, composite and hybrid structures, and performance-based design and retrofitting; materials such as innovative construction materials, sustainable concrete, low carbon concrete, engineered cementitious composites, and super sulfated cement; building engineering encompassing construction engineering, project management, and building information modeling; and deep learning and simulation via artificial intelligence and finite element analysis. Key publications include 'Development and testing of hybrid precast concrete beam-to-column connections under cyclic loading' (Construction and Building Materials, 2017), 'Performance of dowel beam-to-column connections for precast concrete systems under seismic loads: A review' (Construction and Building Materials, 2020), 'Seismic performance of innovative hybrid precast reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections' (Engineering Structures, 2020), 'Enhancement of seismic behaviour of precast beam-to-column joints using engineered cementitious composite' (Engineering Structures, 2022), and 'The impact of using hybrid polyvinyl alcohol–steel fibre ECC on the seismic behaviour of precast beam–to–column joints' (Structures, 2024). He has received the Platinum Award at Universiti Malaya's Innovation and Technology Exhibition (2022) for producing new sustainable construction materials, the Best Technical Paper Award at the 2nd International Conference on Durability of Building and Infrastructures (DuraBI 2021), and a PhD scholarship from Universiti Malaya. Ghayeb serves as Associate Editor for the Civil and Sustainable Urban Engineering Journal and Guest Editor for Materials and Buildings journals published by MDPI.
