About Haim

Dr. Haim Shaked is a tenured Professor of International Studies at the University of Miami since 1988, holding the Dr. M. Lee Pearce Chair in Middle East Peace Studies since 1993. He has directed the Middle East Studies Institute since 1986, serves as Founding Director of the university-wide Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies since 1998, and Director of the George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies since 2005. His academic profile lists expertise in Middle East History, Islam, and Political Science, with specialization in the modern history and politics of the Middle East, Islam as a political force, and Arab-Israeli relations. Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Shaked earned a B.A. Cum Laude in 1962 and an M.A. Cum Laude in 1966 in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies for his thesis on a unique manuscript biography of the Sudanese Mahdi. From 1969 to 1998, he was a Full Professor at Tel Aviv University, co-founding and heading the Moshe Dayan Center/Shiloah Institute for Middle Eastern and African Studies from 1973 to 1980, and serving as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities from 1975 to 1980, during which he introduced Israel’s first B.A. in General Studies. He was also a member of Tel Aviv University’s Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, Senate, and Steering Committee. Between 1981 and 1983, Shaked was Interim Director of the University of Miami’s Center for Advanced International Studies, developing it into the Graduate School of International Studies.

Shaked co-founded and edited the annual Middle East Contemporary Survey across 24 volumes, founded and edited Mideast File, the first fully computerized comprehensive bibliography on the Middle East, and co-edited Zemanim, a Hebrew quarterly magazine on history, with Prof. Shaul Friedlander. He has authored and edited several books and numerous articles on the Middle East. Shaked co-founded 'The Broadcast University' in Israel, producing popular academic programs used in higher education. Over four decades, he has participated as keynote speaker, lecturer, or scholar-in-residence at events in Israel, England, Canada, Mexico, India, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Jordan, Turkey, Puerto Rico, and the United States on Middle East topics, and consulted for private and governmental bodies. He serves on the Board of Advisors of the University of Oklahoma’s International Programs Center/Center for Peace Studies, the Board of Editors of the Middle East Quarterly, and various other academic councils and steering committees.
