Haleagrahara Nagaraja, PhD, Grad CertEd (Academic Practice), serves as Associate Professor and Head of Foundation Studies in the College of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University. He earned his PhD from Manipal University in 1997 and holds a Master’s degree in medical physiology. Nagaraja’s career began as a Lecturer at Manipal University (1989–1998), advancing to Assistant Professor (1998–2002) and Associate Professor (2002–2004). He then served at the International Medical University as Senior Lecturer (2004–2009) and Associate Professor (2009–2011), while holding an Adjunct Associate Professor position (2011–2020). At James Cook University, he was Senior Lecturer (2011–2017) and has been Associate Professor since 2018.
Nagaraja’s research specializations include molecular mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, oxidative stress, antioxidants, bioflavonoids in inflammatory pathways, neuroprotective effects of palm phytonutrients and vitamin E in Parkinson’s disease, biomarkers of diabetic foot ulcer, and anti-rheumatoid arthritic activity of flavonoids and hookworm proteins. He has produced over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals, with more than 900 citations and an h-index of 18. Key publications are 'Na-AIP-1 secreted by human hookworms suppresses collagen-induced arthritis' (2022), 'Tocotrienols ameliorate neurodegeneration and motor deficits in the 6-OHDA-induced rat model of parkinsonism' (2021), 'Therapeutic effect of quercetin in collagen-induced arthritis' (2017), and 'Factors influencing medical students’ experiences and satisfaction with blended integrated e-learning' (2019). Nagaraja received the Australian Medical Students’ Association National Teaching Award (2023) and multiple Dean’s Teaching Awards for Teaching Excellence and Subject Excellence (2017–2022). He serves on the Medical Education Collaborative Committee (2023), editorial boards, and as a peer reviewer for journals and grant assessor.
