Hannah Barlow earned a Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Otago in 2021 with Distinction. Her master's thesis, titled More than a trickle, not yet a flood: Māori Employment and Urban Migration during World War Two, was an investigation of Māori employment and urban migration during the Second World War. The History Programme at the University of Otago congratulated her on this achievement. As a history postgraduate, she contributed as a student researcher to projects featured on the Te Tumu Research Blog, with her research aligning with the project's focus.
