Dr. Hasan H. Turan is a Senior Lecturer and the Research Lead at the Capability Systems Centre within the School of Systems & Computing at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his Master’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from North Carolina State University. Before his current role, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Qatar University from 2015 to 2017.
Dr. Turan’s research focuses on the development and application of data-driven optimization algorithms and simulation models in areas such as service and maintenance logistics, defense applications including fleet management, workforce, and resource planning, energy capacity expansion, and telecommunications networks. He integrates machine learning techniques like reinforcement learning, artificial intelligence, and computational intelligence methods such as genetic algorithms with simulation models, including discrete event and system dynamics simulations, to address complex decision-making problems. With 46 journal articles, 39 conference papers, 7 book chapters, 1 report, and other outputs, his contributions advance simulation-based optimization and decision-making in defense and logistics. Notable publications include "Machine learning integrated multi-objective simulation-based optimization for a personnel planning, asset management and fleet renewal problem" (Computers and Industrial Engineering, 2026), "Advanced mission engineering approach for diverse applications in the defense domain" (Journal of Defense Modeling and Simulation, 2025), "MBSE for robust decision support systems: A resilient, mission-centric reference model" (Digital Engineering, 2025), and "The future of military medical evacuation: literature analysis focused on the potential adoption of emerging technologies and advanced decision-analysis techniques" (Journal of Defense Modeling and Simulation, 2025). He is guest editor for a special issue on recent advances in simulation-based optimization at Annals of Operations Research, an editorial board member of Journal of Business Analytics, and a committee member for leading international conferences on modeling, simulation, information technology, and management science.
