Rate My Professor Hauke Mommsen

Prof. Dr. Hauke Mommsen serves as Professor of Physiotherapy in the Faculty of Health at HAW Kiel, formerly Fachhochschule Kiel. A medical doctor who studied at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, he is a board-certified specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery. His career commenced after Abitur with 20 months of civil service, including roles in nursing and trauma surgery at Krankenhaus Flensburg, as a nursing assistant following a four-week training, and six months as an operating room nurse. He then completed training as a physiotherapist, during which he passed the medical entrance exam and obtained a study place in medicine. Mommsen fulfilled his physiotherapy recognition year during semester breaks and worked part-time as a physiotherapist in a rehabilitation clinic in Kiel's Wellingdorf district. He undertook internships in trauma surgery in Vienna and Zurich, and in surgery in Key West, Florida. Post-graduation, he completed six years of residency training in the operative field of orthopedics and trauma surgery.

In 2005, Mommsen took up a substitute professorship at FH Kiel, becoming a full-time professor in 2007. He has provided medical care as team physician for professional teams such as handball clubs THW Kiel and SG Flensburg-Handewitt, and soccer clubs FC Schalke 04 and FC St. Pauli. In June 2019, he was part of the medical support staff for the German U21 national soccer team at the European Championship in Italy. His teaching responsibilities include modules on sports physiotherapy, international physiotherapy, physiotherapy reference sciences, clinical reasoning, and bachelor theses in physiotherapy. Mommsen's research specializations encompass the scientific foundations of physiotherapy, quality assurance, and international comparisons. He contributes to advancing the academization of physiotherapy through HAW Kiel's dual study program, which combines state examination-based training with academic education to transfer scientific insights into practice.
