Heiko Dietrich is Professor in the School of Mathematics at Monash University, where he also serves as Associate Dean (Graduate Education) in the Faculty of Science since March 2022. He obtained his Diploma in Mathematics in 2005 and doctoral degree in 2009 from the University of Braunschweig, Germany. After doctoral studies and part-time assistant positions there from 2005 to 2009, he held a research fellowship at the University of Auckland, New Zealand (2009-2011), followed by a Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of Trento, Italy (2011-2013). In 2013, he joined Monash University as Lecturer and progressed through promotions: ARC DECRA Fellow and Senior Research Fellow (2014-2017), Senior Lecturer (2017-2020), Associate Professor (2020-2022), and Professor since July 2023. Additional roles include visiting associate professor at Akita International University in 2022 and nominated membership on the Monash Academic Board for 2025-2027.
Dietrich's research centers on computational group theory and algebra, including finite groups, Lie algebras, and computational methods in mathematics. He co-authored the book Coclass graphs of p-groups (Springer Monographs in Mathematics, 2026, with Bettina Eick) and key publications such as Explicit construction of the maximal subgroups of the Monster (Journal of Algebra, 2026, with Lee, Pisani, Popiel), The maximal subgroups of the Monster (Advances in Mathematics, 2025, with Lee, Popiel), Categorification of characteristic structures (Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, 2026, with Brooksbank et al.), A computational approach to almost-inner derivations (Journal of Symbolic Computation, 2024, with de Graaf), and Elementary abelian subgroups: from algebraic groups to finite groups (Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 2024, with An, Litterick). His output includes 58 journal articles, 7 conference papers, 2 books, and 2 software packages. Awards include the 2019 Victorian Tall Poppy Award, Monash Faculty of Science Commendation for Excellence in Research by an Early Career Researcher (2014), ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (2013), Cheryl E. Praeger Visiting Research Fellowship (2022), and Simons Visiting Professorship (2016). He is associate editor for Mathematische Nachrichten (since 2024), Journal of Computational Algebra (since 2023), Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie (since 2023), and Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing (since 2019). Dietrich has secured ARC grants, including for The SmallGroups Library: New Classifications via Symbolic Computation (2026-2027), and participated in CSIRO's STEM Professionals in Schools (2013-2023).
