About Helena

Helena Lage Ferreira is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Faculdade de Zootecnia e Engenharia de Alimentos of the Universidade de São Paulo (FZEA-USP) in Pirassununga, Brazil, where she has held her position since 2011. She earned her degree in Veterinary Medicine from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp), Araçatuba campus, in 2003, and her PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) in 2007. Prior to joining USP, she served as an assistant researcher at Sciensano (formerly VAR) in Belgium from 2008 to 2011 and as a visiting researcher at the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory (SEPRL-ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) from 2017 to 2019.

Her research centers on the diagnosis, epidemiology, and control of zoonoses and emerging viruses in the context of One Health, with particular emphasis on avian influenza viruses and other pathogens affecting production animals, pets, and wildlife. She coordinates the Previr-MCTI Project and serves on the steering committee of INCT-One. Ferreira is President of the Brazilian Society for Virology for the 2023-2024 term, Director of the School at the Latin American Biotechnology Center (Cabbio-MCTI), and a member of the Virus-MCTI Network. In 2023, she was recognized by Forbes as one of the 100 PhD women in Agriculture. She maintains an active laboratory focused on applied preventive veterinary medicine, supporting teaching, diagnostic services, and research activities.
