About Hemant

Hemant Ritturaj Kushwaha is an Assistant Professor in the School of Biotechnology at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He earned his Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, where his thesis titled 'A Computational Analysis of the Signaling Machinery Operative Under Osmotic Stress in Plants' was supervised by Prof. Ram Ramaswamy. With six years of academic experience, Kushwaha's research focuses on systems biology, computational biology, and evolution. He is a recipient of the DST-INSPIRE Faculty Award, which supports innovative research by young scientists.

Kushwaha has published several key papers in high-impact journals. His 2017 work, 'Metabolic regulatory oscillations in intertidal green seaweed Ulva lactuca against tidal cycles,' appeared in Scientific Reports and investigated metabolic adaptations to environmental stresses. In 2016, he co-authored 'MATH-Domain Family Shows Response toward Abiotic Stress in Arabidopsis and Rice' and 'Analyses of Old "Prokaryotic" Proteins Indicate Functional Diversification in Arabidopsis and Oryza sativa,' both in Frontiers in Plant Sciences, exploring protein responses and evolutionary diversification under stress conditions. Earlier publications include 'Putative osmosensor – OsHK3b – a histidine kinase protein from rice shows high structural conservation with its ortholog AtHK1 from Arabidopsis' in the Journal of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics (2014) and 'Genome wide expression analysis of CBS domain containing proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh and Oryza sativa L. reveals their developmental and stress regulation' in BMC Genomics (2009). Prior to his current role, he served as DST-INSPIRE Faculty at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology from 2012 to 2017. He contributes to university committees, including student grievance redressal, and teaches courses such as mathematics and statistics in the M.Sc. Biotechnology program.
