Herman B. ("Dutch") Leonard is the George F. Baker Jr. Professor of Public Management at Harvard Kennedy School and the Eliot I. Snider and Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, where he also serves as co-chair of the Social Enterprise Initiative. He received his PhD in economics from Harvard University in 1979. Leonard teaches in executive programs at both schools on topics including leadership, organizational strategy, crisis management, financial management, governance, performance management, and corporate social responsibility. His research focuses on the relationship between governance, accountability, and performance, as well as crisis management and corporate social responsibility.
Leonard is the co-author of Capitalism at Risk: Rethinking the Role of Business (2011; updated and expanded edition, 2020) and Why Was Boston Strong? (2014), co-editor of Managing Crises: Responses to Large-Scale Emergencies (2009), and author of Checks Unbalanced: The Quiet Side of Public Spending (1986). He has held numerous leadership and advisory roles, including service on boards such as the American Repertory Theatre and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and has advised government entities on economic policy, infrastructure, and performance enhancement.
