About Hernan

Hernan Cuervo is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, where he serves as Director of the Youth Research Collective within the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. His research interests center on the sociology of youth, particularly youth transitions, rural young people and the tensions between their aspirations and senses of belonging, and the application of theory of justice to rural educational issues. Cuervo coordinates and lectures subjects in the Master of Education, Graduate Certificate of Education Research, Master of Teaching, and undergraduate breadth subjects. He is a Chief Investigator on the Life Patterns research program, which examines lifelong learning, relationships, and family dynamics across generations. Previously, he held positions as Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Education, Coordinator of the Graduate Certificate of Education Research, and Convenor of the Rural Education Special Interest Group at the Australian Association for Research in Education. Cuervo holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Buenos Aires.

Cuervo's scholarly contributions include the co-authored book Young People Making It Work: Continuity and Change in Rural Places (Melbourne University Publishing, 2012) and the co-edited volume Thinking about Belonging in Youth Studies (Springer, 2021) with Anita Harris and Johanna Wyn. He has published extensively on rural education, teacher retention, youth belonging, and social justice, with over 3,500 citations on Google Scholar. As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Youth Studies (Springer), he also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal for Research in Rural Education and Revista Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud. Cuervo advises policy for the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition and the Red de Comunidades Rurales in Argentina. In 2022, he received a Research Excellence Award from the Society for the Provision of Education and Research in Australia.
