Rate My Professor Hilde Tubex

Hilde Tubex is Professor at the Law School of the University of Western Australia (UWA), where she served as Director of Criminology from 2021 to 2025 and Deputy Head of School, Research from 2017 to 2019. She holds a PhD in Criminology (1999) and an MA in Criminology (1991) from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, and a BA in Social Work (1987) from HIMW Antwerp. Her research specializations encompass comparative criminology and penal policy, Indigenous Peoples and the criminal justice system, criminalised women, life-sentenced people and parole, penology and prisons, crime and justice policy, international comparative research, and Indigenous overrepresentation in the criminal justice system. Tubex is a member of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Prisoner Reintegration, co-leading the program on Addressing Community Contexts of Reintegration.

Tubex spent fifteen years as a researcher and lecturer at the Free University of Brussels, complemented by policy roles as expert advisor to the Council of Europe and advisor on penal policy to the Belgian Minister of Justice. Following her migration to Australia in 2007, she held the position of Team Leader, Research and Evaluation, at the Department of Corrective Services in Western Australia from 2007 to 2011. She commenced her tenure at UWA in 2011 via an ARC Future Fellowship (FT100100627, 2011–2015) entitled “International Experiences, Marginal Populations and a Focus on the Overrepresentation of Indigenous People,” which examined penal cultures across Australian jurisdictions. Notable publications include "Criminalised women: understanding the drivers of growing female imprisonment in Western Australia" (with L. Long, 2026, Current Issues in Criminal Justice), "Stories that matter: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' Experiences of the Western Australian criminal legal system" (with L. Bartels et al., 2026, Trends and Issues in Crime and Criminal Justice), "Throughcare for Indigenous Peoples leaving prison" (2021), and "Women's pathways into prison: Cycles of harm" (with N. Gately, 2025). She reviews for journals including the European Journal of Criminology and Theoretical Criminology, consulted for the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia (2022), and delivered the lecture "Throughcare for Indigenous offenders: Australian research and looking for examples of good practice" (2021). Recent projects feature the Women in Prison Survey and "Mind the gap: A study on the reintegration needs of returning prisoners," supported by WA Criminal Justice Research Grant Fund.
