About Hiroyuki

Hiroyuki Kagi serves as Professor at the Geochemical Research Center (GcRC), Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo. He received his academic training at The University of Tokyo, completing his undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Science in 1988 and graduate studies in the Division of Science in 1990. His research centers on geochemistry and deep earth mineralogy, with particular emphasis on the behavior of elements on Earth, structural changes of materials under high pressure, and the growth and dissolution of minerals. He employs X-ray and neutron diffraction along with spectroscopic techniques for in-situ observations at high pressure to investigate processes in the Earth’s interior, including trace substances influencing mass transfer and mineral speciation.

Throughout his career at The University of Tokyo, Kagi has held the position of Professor and contributed to advancements in understanding deep-Earth chemistry. He has received multiple honors, including the Academic Award from the Geochemical Society of Japan in 2025 for research on deep-Earth chemistry based on high-pressure experiments, the Academic Award from the Japan Society of High Pressure Science and Technology in 2025 for studies on the structure and properties of light-element-bearing deep-Earth materials under high pressure, the Paper Award from the Japan Mineralogical Society in 2022, Fellowship in the Mineralogical Society of America in 2010, the Japan Mineralogical Society Award in 2009, and the Encouragement Award from the Geochemical Society of Japan in 1998. Kagi has authored or co-authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, with his work cited thousands of times, and has served in leadership roles such as President of the Geochemical Society of Japan from 2019 to 2021. His contributions have advanced knowledge of high-pressure mineral behavior, hydrogen in planetary materials, and related geochemical processes.
