About Hiroyuki

Hiroyuki Mizuta is Professor of Aquaculture Genetics and Genomics in the Division of Marine Life Science, Department of Aquaculture Life Science at Hokkaido University. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Fisheries, Department of Aquaculture at Hokkaido University in 1986 and completed his doctoral course in the Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences, Aquaculture major, in 1992. His career at the university includes positions as assistant starting in 1993, associate professor from 2003, and full professor since 2013, following a brief research role at the Fisheries Research Encouragement Association in 1992.

Mizuta’s research focuses on the reproductive biology of seaweeds, development of fundamental techniques in seaweed breeding, stress defense mechanisms of seaweeds, and nutritional physiology of seaweed propagation. His work examines seaweeds such as Laminaria japonica, Saccharina japonica, and Porphyra species, addressing topics including sorus formation, nutrient requirements, life cycle control, and defense responses. Representative publications include studies on nitrogen recycling in Laminaria (1994), sorus development (1999), phosphorus requirements (2003), and regulation of sorus formation by auxin (2006). He has contributed to committees supporting fisheries talent development and coastal ecosystem vision planning in Hokkaido.
