About Horst

Horst Hohberger is a Teaching Professor at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute and Faculty Advisor for International Programs at the SJTU Global College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. A German scholar with ties to China dating back to the early 1990s, he earned his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in Physics from the University of Potsdam, Germany, in 2006, a Physics Diploma equivalent to an M.S. in 2001, and a Chemistry pre-Diploma equivalent to a B.S. in 1995 from the same university. Hohberger's professional journey began as a Research Assistant at the University of Potsdam from October 2001 to March 2007. He joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University in March 2007 as a Lecturer at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, was promoted to Associate Teaching Professor in September 2014, and advanced to Teaching Professor in September 2021.

Renowned for his instruction in advanced mathematics, Hohberger teaches courses such as Vv186 Honors Mathematics II, Vv285 Honors Mathematics III, Vv286 Honors Mathematics IV, Ve203 Discrete Mathematics, Ve401 Probabilistic Methods in Engineering, Vv454 Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, Vv556 Methods of Applied Mathematics I, and Vv557 Methods of Applied Mathematics II. His exceptional teaching has garnered numerous honors, including the 2022 SJTU Teaching and Education People Award (first class), 2021 Shanghai First-Class Undergraduate Courses in Universities (English-Language Model Course), 2020 SJTU Koguan Top Ten Teacher Award (honorable mention), 2018 SJTU Teaching Excellence Award, 2017 SJTU Tang Lixin Excellent Teacher Award, 2013 SJTU Most Popular Teacher among Students Award (first class), 2011 JI Teaching Excellence Award, and multiple Shanghai Municipal Level Key Course awards. Hohberger's research interests include semiclassical asymptotics, scattering theory, Maslov operators, and academic integrity in international engineering education. Select publications feature Lobachevsky-type formulas via Fourier analysis (2021), Focal Points at Infinity for Short-Range Scattering Trajectories, and The Moral Foundations of Chinese Engineering Students: A Preliminary Investigation. He has led mathematics curriculum development, established academic integrity processes based on the SJTU Global College Honor Code, and since 2014 spearheaded international partnerships with universities in Europe and the US for academic exchanges and degree programs.
