About Hsin-Cheng

Hsin-Cheng Huang is a Distinguished Research Fellow, Professor, and Deputy Director at the Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. He joined the institute in 1997 as an Assistant Research Fellow and progressed to Research Fellow before assuming his current distinguished role in August 2022. Huang earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from Iowa State University in 1997, completing his dissertation titled "Spatial Modeling Using Graphical Markov Models and Wavelets" under the supervision of Noel Cressie. Prior to his doctorate, he received a B.S. in Mathematics from National Taiwan University in 1989. He also holds an affiliated professorship at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University since August 2009.

Huang's research centers on spatial and spatio-temporal statistics, with expertise in nonstationary spatial covariance functions, wavelet decompositions, geostatistics, Markov modeling, and statistical learning. His seminal publications include "Classes of nonseparable, spatio-temporal stationary covariance functions" (Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1999, with N. Cressie), "Deterministic/stochastic wavelet decomposition for recovery of signal from noisy data" (Technometrics, 2000), "Non-stationary Multivariate Spatial Covariance Estimation via Low-Rank Regularization" (Statistica Sinica, 2015, with S.L. Tzeng), "Spatially Adaptive Calibrations of AirBox PM2.5 Data" (Biometrics, 2023, with S.L. Tzeng), and "Reconstructing East Asian Temperatures from 1368 to 1911 Using Historical Documents, Climate Models, and Data Assimilation" (2024). With 72 publications and over 3,800 citations documented on Google Scholar, his work has advanced applications in climate reconstruction, environmental monitoring, and high-dimensional data analysis. Huang was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2016 and received the NSTC Merit Research Fellow Award in 2025. He serves as Co-Editor of Statistica Sinica and has contributed to academic service through session organization and journal editing.
