About Hsinchun

Hsinchun Chen is a University of Arizona Regents' Professor and the Thomas R. Brown Chair Professor in Management and Technology within the Management Information Systems Department at the Eller College of Management. Ranked among the top 50 in computer science by h-index, he received his B.S. in Management Science from National Chiao-Tung University (Taiwan) in 1981, M.B.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1985, M.S. in Information Systems from New York University in 1987, and Ph.D. in Information Systems from New York University in 1989. Joining the University of Arizona in 1989 as Assistant Professor in MIS, he progressed to Associate Professor with tenure in 1996, Full Professor in 1998, McClelland Endowed Professor in 1999, and Regents' Professor and Thomas R. Brown Chair in 2013. As Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory since 1989, his lab has obtained over $60 million in research funding from NSF, NIH, NLM, DOD, DOJ, CIA, DHS, and other agencies, including $15 million for the AZSecure Cybersecurity Program since 2012.

Dr. Chen's academic interests encompass artificial intelligence, digital libraries, data/text/web mining, business and competitive intelligence, security informatics (counter-terrorism, cybersecurity analytics via COPLINK, Dark Web, Hacker Web, AZSecure), and health informatics (health big data analytics via DiabeticLink and SilverLink). A Fellow of ACM (2015), IEEE (2006), AAAS (2006), and AIS, he has earned the NCTU Distinguished Alumnus Award (2005), IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award (2006), INFORMS Design Science Award (2008, 2023), IEEE Research Achievement Award in Intelligence and Security Informatics (2011), University of Arizona Innovator of the Year (2013), AIS Impact Award (2020), and IEEE Big Data Security Pioneer Award (2022). With 600+ publications cited over 60,000 times (h-index 116, Google Scholar), key works include books like "Exploring and Mining the Dark Side of the Web: The Dark Web Project" (Springer, 2012), "Security Informatics" (Springer, 2010), "Medical Informatics: Knowledge Management and Data Mining in Biomedicine" (Springer, 2005), and recent papers in MIS Quarterly and IEEE TPAMI. He founded Knowledge Computing Corporation (2000, merged with i2, acquired by IBM for $500M in 2011), Caduceus Intelligence Corporation (2010), and serves as Founding Editor-in-Chief, ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems (2009-2014), Editor-in-Chief, Springer Security Informatics (2010-2018), and Senior Editor, MIS Quarterly (2016-2019).
