Arizona State University
Makes learning exciting and meaningful.
A master at fostering understanding.
Huan Liu is a Regents Professor and Ira A. Fulton Professor of Computer Science and Engineering in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence at Arizona State University. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in 1989 and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prior to joining Arizona State University in 2000, where he received immediate tenure, Liu worked as a researcher at Telstra Research Laboratories in Melbourne, Australia, from 1989 and taught computer science at the National University of Singapore starting in 1994. Over his more than two decades at Arizona State University, he has directed the Data Mining and Machine Learning Laboratory and mentored 34 Ph.D. students, with 13 joining academia directly after graduation. His research centers on data mining, machine learning, feature selection, social computing, social media mining, and artificial intelligence, developing computational methods to tackle big data issues in areas such as health, social media, and disinformation detection. Liu holds seven patents stemming from his research at Arizona State University and has amassed over 125,000 citations with an h-index of 150.
Key publications include the textbook Social Media Mining: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press, 2014, co-authored with Reza Zafarani and Mohammad Ali Abbasi), Feature Selection for Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (Springer, 1998, with Hiroshi Motoda), and highly cited papers such as Feature selection for classification (Intelligent Data Analysis, 1997), Efficient feature selection via analysis of relevance and redundancy (Journal of Machine Learning Research, 2004), and Fake news detection on social media: A data mining perspective (ACM SIGKDD Explorations Newsletter, 2017). Liu is a Fellow of the ACM (2018), AAAI (2019), IEEE (2012), and AAAS. He received the ACM SIGKDD 2022 Innovation Award for contributions to social media mining and feature selection, the 2014 President's Award for Innovation from Arizona State University, and was named Regents Professor in 2023, the highest faculty honor at the university. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Big Data, and founding organizer of the International Conference Series on Social Computing, Behavioral-Cultural Modeling, and Prediction.
