Professor I-Van Ho is an Associate Professor and Clinical Professor in Macquarie Medical School at Macquarie University, where he also serves as Head of Ophthalmic Surgery. He is a vitreoretinal surgeon and macular disease specialist with extensive clinical and academic expertise in ophthalmology. A graduate of Sydney University Medical School, he earned his MBBS and holds additional qualifications including MPH, PhD, and FRANZCO. Professor Ho completed his ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital, followed by vitreoretinal fellowships at Sydney Eye Hospital and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, one of the world's leading eye institutions. He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and maintains active clinical practices at MQ Health and Retina Associates.
Professor Ho's research focuses on retinal and macular diseases, with significant contributions to the literature through peer-reviewed publications. Notable works include 'Vitrectomy for diabetic macular edema: a systematic review and meta-analysis' published in 2014 in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, co-authored with Matthew P. Simunovic and Alex P. Hunyor; 'Type 3 neovascularization: the expanded spectrum of retinal angiomatous proliferation' in 2008 in Retina, with K. Bailey Freund and others; 'Chronic central serous chorioretinopathy and fundus autofluorescence' in 2008; 'Prevalence of vitreoretinal interface disorders in an Australian population: the Blue Mountains eye study' in 2021 in Ophthalmology Science, with Gerald Liew and colleagues; 'Acylcarnitine abnormalities implicate mitochondrial dysfunction in glucocorticoid-induced ocular hypertension' in 2020; and 'Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy secondary to idiopathic scleritis' in 2017. These publications address key areas such as diabetic macular edema, retinal neovascularization, serous chorioretinopathy, vitreoretinal interface disorders, and choroidal vasculopathy, advancing clinical understanding and management strategies in vitreoretinal surgery. Professor Ho contributes to medical education, training the next generation of ophthalmologists at Macquarie University.
