Ian Owens is a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems at the Centre for Defence Engineering and Physical Science, Cranfield University. An experienced researcher, consultant, and academic, he specializes in emerging technologies, information systems development methodologies, digital business strategy, and networking and communications technologies. Owens completed his undergraduate degree at Sheffield University, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in IT and Urban History jointly awarded by Leicester University and Leiden University, and an MSc in Information Management at Sheffield University. With over 25 years in academia, he has held positions at Sheffield University, Oxford University, Edinburgh Napier University, and Swansea University. He has served as an external examiner at Bolton University, Edinburgh Napier University, Staffordshire University, and Bedfordshire University, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Owens serves as Course Director for the MSc in Cyber Defence and Information Assurance (Defence) and manages modules including emerging technologies, methods and tools for information systems development, digital business strategy, and incident management. His research interests encompass software defined networks—for which he is recruiting doctoral students—wireless aware networks through a MOD-funded project under the CSIIIS framework, and the military application of the Internet of Things, as the UK representative on the NATO Science and Technology Organisation Technical Team IST-147. He has extensive consultancy experience with clients including NATO, IBM, DSTL, QinetiQ, and UK MOD, involving successful funding bids, project management, and dissemination via publications, workshops, and presentations at international conferences. Key publications include 'Discovery of Things: A Fully-Distributed Opportunistic Approach' (2015), 'SOA and Wireless Mobile Networks in the Tactical Domain: Results from Experiments' (2015), 'IST-118 – SOA Recommendations for Disadvantaged Grids in the Tactical Domain' (2013), 'A Simple Tool to Assist in Agile Methodology Adoption Decisions' (2007, Journal of Decision Systems), and the book 'Information and Business Performance: A Study of Information Systems and Services in High-Performing Companies' (1996). His contributions advance defence information systems, cyber defence, and tactical communications strategies.
