Innes Gilbertson is the Assistant Warden and Tautiaki-Kaiāwhina at University Flats, part of Campus and Collegiate Life Services at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. In this position, he contributes to supporting a diverse residential community of approximately 1,300 students each year, encompassing domestic and international students, mature postgraduates, and their families. University Flats provides accommodation and fosters an inclusive environment aligned with the university's values.
Innes Gilbertson joined the University Flats team in 2024. As part of the team, he was recognized in the 2024 University of Otago Staff Awards, where University Flats received the Award for Sustainable Practice by Staff. Over the past two years, the team implemented initiatives such as the Drop and Swap station for resource sharing, support for period poverty, and a food recycling program. These efforts promote sustainable behaviors, reduce waste, enhance food security, and support community engagement, reflecting the university's principles of manaakitanga, pono, māhirahira, and whakawhanaungatanga, while advancing United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
