About Iven

Iven Klineberg is Emeritus Professor of Prosthodontics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He graduated from the University of Sydney with a BDS and BSc, majoring in physiology, as a Dental Health Education and Research Foundation Scholar, and completed his MDS in prosthodontics. In 1971, he obtained a PhD from the University of London as a Commonwealth Medical Scholar at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Department of Applied Physiology, and earned the Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDSRCS). Appointed NH&MRC Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Dentistry in 1971, he maintained a specialist prosthodontics practice. From 1977 to 1978, he served as Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Occlusion at the University of Michigan. He was Professor and Head of Prosthodontics at the University of Sydney from 1978 to 2006, held the Nobel Biocare Chair of Oral Rehabilitation from 2007, and headed the Jaw Function and Oro-facial Pain Research Unit. Klineberg served as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry from 1991 to 1998 and 2003 to 2004.

His research specializations include occlusion and its relationships to neurocognition, neuroplasticity, and health; osseointegration of dental implants influenced by metabolic diseases, hyperglycaemia, and high-fat/fructose diets; functional properties of jaw muscles such as the medial and lateral pterygoid; rehabilitation of patients with ectodermal dysplasia, hypodontia, and complete edentulism; mastication, cognition, and oral health-related quality of life; bone augmentation; tooth wear and risk factors; and temporomandibular disorders including jaw muscle pain and occlusal adjustments. Key publications encompass the co-edited book Functional Occlusion in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics (2013), Oral Rehabilitation: A Case-Based Approach (2012), and articles such as 'A diet high in fat and fructose adversely affects osseointegration of titanium implants in rats' (2019), 'The role of progressive oral implant rehabilitation in mastication, cognition and oral health-related quality of life outcomes' (2020), and contributions to occlusion management and TMD research. Major awards include Member of the Order of Australia (AM, 1996), Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2002), Life Membership of the International College of Prosthodontists, and fellowships FDSRCS (Eng, Edin hc), FRACDS, FICD. His contributions have advanced understanding in prosthodontics, oral rehabilitation, and orofacial pain.
