Izan Izan is an Emeritus Professor in the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Economics with First Class Honours from Monash University (1973), an MBA (1976), and a PhD (1978) from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Her professional career began as an Audit Assistant at Peat Marwick Mitchell (1974), followed by a lecturing position at the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of New South Wales (1979–1981). She joined the University of Western Australia in 1981 as a Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Finance, advancing to Senior Lecturer (1985–1986), Associate Professor (1986–1990), and Professor (1990–1993). From 1994 to 1999, she served as Professor and Head of the Department. She then held the position of Executive Dean of the Division of Business, IT and Law at Murdoch University (1999–2000), before returning to UWA as Professor and Director of Doctoral Programs in the Graduate School of Management (2000–2004) and Deputy Dean of the UWA Business School (2003–2013). She retired in July 2014 and received the Chancellor’s Medal in March 2015 for her service contributions. In 1990, she became the first woman in Australia appointed Professor in accounting and finance. She is a Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA) and was elected Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA) in 2004. In 2011, she earned a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. In 2025, Monash University Business School awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Her research interests encompass capital markets-based studies on initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and stochastic index numbers. Notable publications include "To scheme or bid? Choice of takeover method and impact on premium" (Bugeja et al., 2016, Australian Journal of Management), "CEO Compensation from M&As in Australia" (Bugeja et al., 2012, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting), "Consequences of Riding Takeover Waves: Australian Evidence" (Duong & Izan, 2012, International Review of Finance), and "Volatility and stock price indexes" (Clements et al., 2013, Applied Economics). She secured Australian Research Council funding for projects such as schemes of arrangement versus takeovers (2011), directors' roles in corporate takeovers (2006), and stochastic index numbers (2002). Izan chaired UWA’s Academic Promotions Committee, served as Deputy Chair of the Academic Board (2001–2002), and was Inaugural Chair of the Board of Studies for the Bachelor of Commerce (2009–2013). She played a key role in securing EQUIS and AACSB accreditations for the UWA Business School. Additionally, she served as Chair of the Audit Committee at AlintaGas, on the Finance Committee of the Black Swan Theatre Board, and currently as Deputy Chair of Unicredit, chairing its Remuneration and Conditions Committee.
