Brings real-world insights to the classroom.
Jackie Fox is the Senior Analyst for the Learner Success Plan in the Disability Information and Support team at the University of Otago, located in the Information Services Building in Dunedin. She has a extensive career history within the department, beginning as a Student Advisor around 2012, serving as Acting Learning Support Manager, and being formally appointed Learning Support Manager in 2014—a position she held through at least 2021. In this capacity, Fox managed academic support services for students with disabilities, impairments, injuries, or medical conditions, focusing on equitable access to education. She collaborated closely with the Examinations Office to arrange alternative exam accommodations, such as additional time for students with specific learning disabilities, readers, writers, ergonomic equipment, alternative formatting, computers, and separate rooms, ensuring exams tested subject knowledge rather than reading or writing speed. Fox emphasized individualized support, stating, “We look at the student’s individual needs,” and highlighted the satisfaction derived from enabling students to succeed: “We get a lot of satisfaction out of knowing students can just get on with it.” Her approach promoted a level playing field without disadvantage or undue advantage.
In December 2020, Jackie Fox received the Dunedin Harbour Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award, nominated by her manager Melissa Lethaby for her forward-thinking, goal-oriented leadership and ability to create effective processes amid the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic. She articulated her passion for the work: “I am passionate about providing equitable educational opportunities and working with students who have a disability, impairment, medical condition or injury in a manner that will contribute to their overall outstanding University of Otago experience. It is a privilege to work with students knowing that what our team does empowers students to be the best they can be as they strive towards their own successes.” Fox represents the University of Otago on the National Executive Committee of Achieve New Zealand, contributing to national standards for disability support in higher education. On 14 March 2024, she co-presented the seminar 'Unlock your academic potential with Disability Information and Support' with Emily Chatfield. Her long-term commitment has been featured in multiple Disability Information and Support newsletters, affirming her role in fostering an inclusive university environment.
