Jacopo Buti is Professor of Periodontology and Head of the Periodontology Unit at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at University College London. He serves as Honorary Consultant in Periodontology at UCLH Eastman Dental Hospitals. Buti obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Florence in 2004, followed by a PhD in Applied Statistics from the University of Florence in 2011. He earned his Membership in Periodontics (MPerio) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh at the University of Manchester and holds Senior Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Buti's academic career began as Assistant Professor in Periodontics at the University of Florence from 2007 to 2009. In his current roles at UCL, he directs the MSc in Periodontology distance learning programme and has managed the UCL Eastman Dental Institute Human Tissue Biobank since 2022. His research focuses on periodontology, including clinical trials, long-term outcomes of periodontal treatment, supportive periodontal care, and the interplay between oral health and systemic diseases. Prominent publications include 'Periodontitis is associated with hypertension' (Cardiovascular Research, 2020), cited over 490 times; 'Recurrence and progression of periodontitis and methods of management' (Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 2022); 'Comparative evidence of different surgical techniques for treatment of gingival recession: A systematic review and network meta-analysis' (Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 2023); 'Longevity of teeth in patients susceptible to periodontitis after more than 20 years of supportive periodontal therapy' (2023); and 'The influence of oral health on sports performance' (British Dental Journal, 2026). With 93 publications and over 3,400 citations, his contributions advance evidence-based periodontology and interdisciplinary oral-systemic health research.
