About Jacqueline

Professor Jacqueline Manuel serves as Professor of English Education in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in English, a Diploma of Education, and a Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature from the University of New England. In her academic career at the University of Sydney, she has held key appointments including Program Director for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) program, coordinator of secondary English curriculum courses, and affiliate member of the Department of English. Professor Manuel has made significant contributions to teacher education and curriculum development through her teaching and coordination roles.

Her research focuses on areas such as the motivation and retention of new teachers, teenagers' reading practices and preferences, creativity in English education, and the historical development of English curriculum, particularly in New South Wales. She has an extensive publication record, including co-editing the volumes International Perspectives on English Teacher Development: From Initial Teacher Education to Highly Accomplished Professional (Routledge, 2022, with Goodwyn et al.) and Reimagining Shakespeare Education: Teaching and Learning through Collaboration (Cambridge University Press, 2023, with Semler and Hansen).
