James Brock is a Professor in the Department of Language & Literature at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. He holds an M.F.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. As a poet, playwright, and occasional actor, Brock is a founding member and the current Producing Director of Ghostbird Theatre Company. His research interests center on 20th and 21st century literature and creative writing. He incorporates his practice as a teaching artist into courses such as AML 3154 Poetry of the United States, AML 3175 Drama of the United States, CRW 2001 Introduction to Creative Writing, CRW 3311 Poetic Techniques, ENG 4930 Senior Seminar, ENL 3023 Studies in Later British Literature, and LIT 3400 Interdisciplinary Topics in literature.
Brock's major publications include poetry collections Gods & Money (WordTech Editions, 2010), Pictures That Got Small (WordTech Editions, 2005), nearly Florida (Anhinga, 2000), and The Sunshine Mine Disaster (University of Idaho Press, 1995). His plays comprise 3 (2019), Everyone on this Train (2018), The Chicken Play (co-written with Hanny Zuniga, 2016), The Guardsman (translation of Ferenc Molnár’s comedy, 2015), Because Beauty Must Be Broken Daily (2014), and The Pumpkin Grower (2012). He has contributed scholarly articles such as "The Growth of Mathematics" in College English (1985), a piece co-authored with Gerri Reaves in Studies in Popular Culture (1997), and the book chapter "The Perils of a 'Poster Girl': Muriel Rukeyser, Partisan Review, and Wake Island." Brock has received key awards and fellowships including the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in Poetry Writing, Alex Haley Fellowship for Creative Writing, Individual Artist Fellowship in Playwriting from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Individual Artist Fellowships from the Idaho Commission for the Arts and Tennessee Arts Commission, and the American Academy of Poets Prize. These honors reflect his influence in poetry, drama, and literary studies.
