Rate My Professor James Hanly

Dr James Hanly is Senior Lecturer in Soil Science in the School of Agriculture and Environment at Massey University. He holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (1996), a Master of Applied Science (2001), and a Doctor of Philosophy (2012), all from Massey University. His research focuses on nutrient cycling and management in agricultural and horticultural systems, quantifying and mitigating losses of nitrogen and phosphorus to freshwater, and improving management of farm dairy effluent.

Hanly has contributed to numerous studies on pasture renewal, alternative forages, urease inhibitors, and soil amendments, with recent publications including work on biological nitrogen fixation in diverse pasture swards (2025), changes in soil carbon following tillage (2025), and nitrogen leaching under sheep grazing systems (2023). He serves as a doctoral supervisor and is affiliated with the Fertilizer and Lime Research Centre. His work supports sustainable agricultural practices in New Zealand through field-based research on nutrient budgeting and water quality protection.
