About James

James Ted McDonald is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of New Brunswick. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Melbourne, Australia. McDonald serves as the founding Director of the New Brunswick Institute for Research, Data and Training (NB-IRDT), New Brunswick’s provincial administrative data centre. He is also the New Brunswick Lead for the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU), Academic Director of the NB Statistics Canada Research Data Centre, Chair of the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) Academic Council, and a member of the CRDCN Board and the executive committee of Health Data Research Network Canada.

McDonald’s research encompasses labour economics, health economics, immigration, and socioeconomic determinants of health outcomes including cancer. He has supervised numerous graduate students in economics and interdisciplinary studies on topics such as immigrant health, wage gaps, and healthcare utilization. McDonald has been recognized with the University Research Scholar designation at UNB for 2012-2014 and 2020-2022, as well as the 2019 Mike McCracken Award for Economics Statistics from the Canadian Economics Association (shared). He previously received Research Merit Awards from UNB in 2011 and 2016.
