P. James Peebles is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics at Princeton University and holds the title of Albert Einstein Professor of Science. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in 1958 and a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University in 1962. Peebles has remained at Princeton University throughout his career, serving as an instructor and researcher in the early 1960s before becoming assistant professor in 1965, associate professor in 1968, and full professor in 1972. He was named Albert Einstein Professor of Science in 1984 and transferred to emeritus status in 2000.

Peebles specializes in physical cosmology. In 2019 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology. He continues active research in the field, with a preference for underappreciated issues such as the dynamics of isolated galaxies, the formation and structure of pure disk galaxies, and the motions of nearby galaxies under gravitational assumptions. Peebles is the author of several influential books on cosmology, including Cosmology’s Century: An Inside History of Our Modern Understanding of the Universe. His work has shaped contemporary understanding of the universe’s structure and history.
