About James

Professor James Kit Hon Tsoi is an Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong, where he also serves as Assistant Dean (Innovation), Director of the Global Hub for Future Dentistry, and Co-Director of the Central Research Laboratories (Strategy and Development). He earned his BSc in Applied and Analytical Chemistry and PhD in Dental Materials Science from the University of Hong Kong. He holds memberships of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and the British Computer Society (MBCS), as well as Fellowship of AdvanceHE (FHEA). Since joining the HKU Faculty of Dentistry in 2012, he has supervised the graduation of 44 MSc students and 14 PhD candidates.

Professor Tsoi's research specializations include dental materials science, with emphasis on mechanical behaviors, surface and bonding properties, and ceramics; AI applications in dentistry such as smart manufacturing, digital dentistry, CAD/CAM, and 3D printing; and dental education in basic sciences and e-learning. He has authored over 180 peer-reviewed journal articles, published and granted 10 patents, and amassed more than 7,000 citations, demonstrating significant impact in the field. His accolades encompass the 2024 IADR Hatton Awards (Senior Basic Science Category – First Place), 2024 IADR CTOR Award for Student Excellence in Orthodontics Research, 2023 IADR-SEA Division Hatton Award, 2021 IADR SEA Research Award in Dental Materials and Biomaterials, and a 2022 Silver Medal. He serves as President of the IADR-Dental Materials Group, Member-at-large of the Academy of Dental Materials, editorial board member for Dental Materials, Committee Member of the Guangdong Province Medical Device Standardization Technical Committee, and Hong Kong head-of-delegate for ISO/TC 106 (Dentistry). Key publications include "Direct colour printing on zirconia using 222 nm UV-C photons" (Dental Materials, 2025), "Multifunctional Injectable Bioadhesive with Toll-like Receptor 4 and Myeloid Differentiation Factor 2 Antagonistic Anti-inflammatory Potential for Periodontal Regeneration" (ACS Nano, 2025), and "Influences of environmental temperature on the UV-C colour printing performance" (Journal of Dentistry, 2026).
