Professor Jan Lindsay is a Professor in the School of Environment within the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland. She holds an MSc in Geology from the University of Auckland and a PhD in Geosciences from the University of Giessen in Germany. Since joining the University of Auckland in 2006, she has held several leadership positions, including Associate Dean of Science (Research) from 2018 to 2024, and was promoted to Professor in 2020, becoming New Zealand’s first woman Professor in Volcanology.
Her research focuses on volcanology, volcanic hazard assessment, volcanic hazard maps, volcanic risk communication, and distributed volcanism, with particular emphasis on the Auckland Volcanic Field through her long-standing co-leadership of the DEVORA research programme since 2008. She has conducted extensive work on magmatic and volcanic systems in New Zealand, the Eastern Caribbean, the Central Andes of South America, and Saudi Arabia, including co-leading the VORiSA project. Professor Lindsay previously served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Volcanology from 2018 to 2024 and has held various roles with the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI). She is a past President of the Geological Society of New Zealand and has been a member of the New Zealand Volcano Science Advisory Panel since 2012. She also contributed to the Urban Theme of the MBIE-funded Resilience to Nature’s Challenges National Science Challenge from 2019 to 2024.
