About Jan

Daniel Jan Martin is a Lecturer in Landscape Architecture at The University of Western Australia (UWA) Design School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Environmental Design, and Master of Architecture with Distinction, all from UWA, and is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy within the UWA Design School. His academic interests encompass environmental planning and design, GIS and spatial analysis, landscape analysis, urban ecology, urban water systems, housing, forests, and conservation planning. Working on Noongar Country in southwest Australia, Martin bridges conservation and design through his research on ecosystems and water systems. He co-leads the collaborative practice Super Natural and is affiliated with the UWA Oceans Institute.

In his teaching role, Martin delivers courses including LACH1000 Landscape Foundation Studio, LACH3001 Landscape Resolutions Studio, LACH3505 and LACH4505 Critical Theory in Landscape Architecture, and LACH4423 Landscape and Urban Ecology. His contributions have earned recognition through awards such as the WA Coastal Awards for Excellence in Education, Engagement, Science and Research (shared, 2025), UWA Early-Career Research Award Commendation (2024), Good Design Award Communication Print Winner (2024), Landscape Foundation Australia (LFA) Fellowship (2024), and Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) National Award for Research, Policy and Communications (shared, 2021). Key publications include serving as editor of Forests Atlas: A field guide to the forests of south west Australia (2023) with Noel Nannup and Alice Ford; Matters of Time: Landscape Architecture Australia Special Issue (editor, 2022); Defining and Creating New Protected Areas in the South West Forests Beyond 2024 (2022); Place Value Ashfield (2021); and Whole Perth Catalogue (2019). Martin has presented public lectures including 'Perth: La dualidad entre lo húmedo y lo seco' (2024) and 'Forests Atlas x The Giants' (2023). His work supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land), advancing environmental communication and advocacy in landscape architecture.
