Dr. Jana Orszaghova is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Earth and Oceans at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the UWA Oceans Institute and UWA Defence and Security Institute. She also holds the position of Deputy Program Leader for the Offshore Renewable Energy Systems program in the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). Orszaghova's academic journey began with a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Southampton (2006), followed by an MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing from the University of Oxford (2007), and culminated in a PhD in coastal and ocean engineering from Oxford (2011). Post-PhD, she gained four years of industry experience before rejoining academia in 2016 at UWA.
Her research centers on marine renewable energy and ocean technologies, with a particular emphasis on hydrodynamics, wave-structure interactions, wave energy converters (WECs), floating and fixed offshore wind turbines, and non-linear excitation mechanisms. These efforts aim to develop safer, more reliable, and economical marine energy systems for offshore industries. Key publications include "From motion to moments: conditioning analysis of floating offshore wind turbine tower bending" (2026, Marine Structures), "Design Waves and low-frequency responses of a semi-sub floating wind turbine in spread seas" (2025, Ocean Engineering), "Design Waves and extreme responses for an M4 floating, hinged wave energy converter" (2025, Journal of Fluids and Structures), "Wave- and drag-driven subharmonic responses of a floating wind turbine" (2021, Journal of Fluid Mechanics), and "Transverse motion instability of a submerged moored buoy" (2019, Proceedings of the Royal Society A). Orszaghova teaches courses such as Energy from Oceans (OCEN2001) and Engineering Research Project (GENG4411/4412). She delivers public lectures on topics including ocean wave energy and offshore renewable energy developments. Her work aligns with UN SDGs 7, 9, and 13.
