Jane Choi serves as a Professional Practice Fellow in the Discipline of Oral Health within the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago. She is a registered oral health therapist with expertise in clinical oral health practices. Choi completed her Bachelor of Oral Health and Master of Oral Health degrees at the University of Otago. Her master's thesis, submitted in March 2021, is titled 'The work experiences of a cohort of New Zealand oral health therapists,' supervised by Dr. Susan Moffat and Mrs. Alison Meldrum. This qualitative study explored the professional experiences of the first cohort of oral health graduates from the University of Otago in 2009.
Choi's research contributions focus on practical aspects of dental procedures and oral health therapy. She co-authored 'Dental high-speed handpiece and ultrasonic scaler aerosol generation levels and the effect of suction and air supply,' published on June 1, 2023, with Susan M. Moffat, Warwick J. Duncan, J. Neil Waddell, and Mark Jermy, addressing infection control in dental settings. Another publication, 'Air-polishing technology is an effective alternative chairside method for cleaning dentures,' appeared in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene on September 8, 2023, co-authored with Violina Gunawan, Samuel D. Carrington, and Joanne Jung Eun Choi, all affiliated with the Sir John Walsh Research Institute at the University of Otago. She has participated in funded projects, including a University of Otago Research Grant of $29,488 for investigating aerosol generation by dental high-speed handpieces (2020), alongside Joanne Choi, Susan Moffat, and Neil Waddell. Additional involvement includes projects on novel white preformed crowns for drill-free management of children's tooth decay and optical properties of 3D printed crown materials (2024). Her work supports clinical and translational research in dentistry.
