Professor Janette Bobis, SFHEA, BEd (University of Sydney), MEdAdmin (Hons) (UNSW), PhD (UNSW), serves as Professor of Mathematics Education in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at the University of Sydney. She is a distinguished mathematics educator and researcher whose academic interests focus on teacher professional learning in mathematics education and student learning, particularly aspects related to motivation, engagement, and understanding of mathematics concepts. Her teaching encompasses these areas, contributing to the preparation of future educators in primary mathematics pedagogy.

Professor Bobis has enjoyed a long career at the University of Sydney, previously serving as Pro Dean Research in the Faculty of Education and Social Work. She supervises research-based degrees and leads projects examining innovative strategies such as finger tracing to enhance mathematical performance, instructional moves to engage diverse learners, and challenges in remote mathematics learning. With 115 publications and over 2,400 citations, her influence in the field is substantial. Key works include 'Instructional Moves that Increase Chances of Engaging All Students in Learning Mathematics' (2021, Mathematics), 'Cognitive load effects in a primary-school geometry task' (2009, Learning and Instruction), 'Threats and opportunities in remote learning of mathematics' (2020), 'Challenging teacher beliefs about student engagement' (2015), and 'Mimicking tracing actions enhances young children's mathematical problem solving' (2022, Applied Cognitive Psychology). Among her honors are the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) Early Career Research Award (1992), a shared MERGA Research Award for outstanding contributions to mathematics education research, and a 2007 award for research on teacher pre-service education.
