About Jarrod

Professor Jarrod Hepburn serves as Professor and Director of Studies for International Economic Law at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, a position reflecting his expertise in the field. He joined Melbourne Law School in June 2015, following his academic training and professional experience. Hepburn earned his DPhil, MPhil, and BCL degrees from Balliol College, University of Oxford. He also holds first-class honours undergraduate degrees in law and software engineering from the University of Melbourne. His international academic engagements include visiting researcher positions at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, the Europa-Institut at the University of Saarland, and the Centre for International Law at the National University of Singapore. Prior to his current role, Hepburn practiced law in the Competition Group of a major Australian commercial law firm and is admitted to practice in Australian federal and state jurisdictions.

Hepburn's research specializes in international economic law and general international law, with a particular emphasis on international investment law. His scholarship has been published in journals including the American Journal of International Law, the International and Comparative Law Quarterly, the Journal of International Dispute Settlement, the Journal of World Investment and Trade, and the Melbourne Journal of International Law. A notable publication is his book, Domestic Law in International Investment Arbitration, issued by Oxford University Press in 2017. He contributes regularly to the Investment Arbitration Reporter, offering coverage and analysis of foreign investment disputes. At Melbourne Law School, Hepburn teaches International Investment Law in the Melbourne JD program and the Melbourne Law Masters program.
