About Jasmin

Associate Professor Jasmin Hufschmid serves as an expert in wildlife medicine within the Melbourne Veterinary School at the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Science. She earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Science with Honours (BVSc Hons) from the University of Sydney in 1999. Following graduation, she practiced as a veterinarian in mixed animal practice in Albury-Wodonga for three years. In 2004, she joined the University of Melbourne, where she completed her PhD in wildlife health in 2009. Subsequently, she held a postdoctoral fellowship focused on wildlife toxicology and pathology, and was appointed Lecturer in Wildlife Health in 2012, progressing to Associate Professor in Wildlife Medicine. Hufschmid is a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Veterinary Epidemiology (MANZCVS Epi).

Her academic interests center on wildlife population health, particularly the intersections of conservation impacts and public health risks. Her research encompasses parasitology, infectious diseases, pathology, epidemiology, and disease risk analysis. Ongoing studies include toxoplasmosis in Australian marsupials and the effects of plastics on avian health. Notable publications include "Gastrointestinal helminth parasites of urban and rural foxes around Melbourne, Australia" (2025), "Our world-first study found 'forever chemicals' in Australian possums" (2025), "Exposure to Persistent Organic Pollutants in Australian Waterbirds" (2023), "A Novel Marine Mammal Coxiella burnetii Genome Sequencing Identifies a New Genotype with Potential Virulence" (2023), and "Lead exposure of mainland Australia's top avian predator" (2023). She actively collaborates with ecologists, toxicologists, and other specialists. Hufschmid chairs the Wildlife Health Forum Victoria, serves on the council of the Wildlife Disease Association, and will assume the presidency of its Australasian Section at the end of 2024. She also contributes to the Southern Bent-Wing Bat Recovery Team.
